At least 15 people were injured on Monday after violence broke out during the All Progressives Congress (APC) West Senatorial District primaries in Alimosho, Lagos State.
The incident was confirmed by CSP Aduroja Olurotimi, Officer in Charge of the Lagos Command Tactical Team in Egbeda, who said those injured had been taken to hospital for medical attention.
Olurotimi explained that the clash involved rival factions within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said police officers and other security agencies quickly intervened to restore calm at the venue of the exercise.
According to him, no arrests had been made at the time of the report.
Eyewitnesses said the disturbance began around 1:00 p.m. at the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat while party members were being called to vote.
The disagreement reportedly degenerated into a violent confrontation, leading to the destruction of chairs, doors and glass windows inside the venue.
The violence triggered panic among attendees, with many party members running for safety during the stampede.
Some participants sustained injuries caused by broken glass and the ensuing disorder.
A party member identified as Iya Ajoke criticised the security arrangements, saying she would avoid future primaries if members’ safety could not be assured.
Another APC member, Mr Ojo Aina, said the process had been proceeding peacefully before the sudden disruption.
He noted that several women suffered facial injuries from shattered glass during the incident.
Mrs Mistura Alao also expressed disappointment, saying she no longer had confidence in the conduct of the primaries.
According to her, security operatives present at the venue struggled to contain the violence effectively.
Mr Ajala Umar, who sustained minor injuries during the chaos, described the situation as worrying ahead of future elections.
