Okpebholo Charges Edo Pilgrims To Uphold Nigeria’s Image During Hajj

Governor Monday Okpebholo has called on intending pilgrims from Edo State travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj to conduct themselves responsibly and protect the image of both the state and Nigeria.

The governor made the appeal during a farewell ceremony for the pilgrims, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, on Sunday in Benin.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, Okpebholo assured the Muslim community of his administration’s continued support and commitment to the welfare of pilgrims.

He stated that the cordial relationship between his administration and the Muslim community reflected his inclusive style of governance.

The governor commended Edo pilgrims for their discipline during previous Hajj exercises, noting that the state’s camp in Saudi Arabia had become a model for others because of its welfare arrangements and feeding standards.

According to him, pilgrims from other states had particularly praised Edo’s hospitality and the provision of African meals during the pilgrimage.

Okpebholo also acknowledged the challenges experienced during preparations for the exercise, especially delays by some intending pilgrims in completing their travel documentation.

He described the issue as a national concern and assured that the state government was engaging relevant federal authorities to improve future coordination.

The governor urged the pilgrims to obey Saudi Arabian laws, remain united and avoid actions capable of tarnishing the reputation of Edo State and Nigeria.

The Amirul Hajj, Ali Sulayman, also advised the pilgrims to demonstrate gratitude to the government by maintaining good conduct throughout the pilgrimage.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Muhammad Uduimoh, said 351 people initially registered for the pilgrimage, but only 95 pilgrims, including officials, would participate.

Uduimoh appealed to the state government to provide additional mobility and operational support for the board, including official vehicles and an ambulance for Edo pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.
