The Kaduna State Government has pledged to uphold press freedom as part of activities marking the 2026 World Press Freedom Day.
The observance, themed “Shaping a Future at Peace,” highlights the importance of an independent and responsible media in advancing peace, human rights and sustainable development. A UNESCO conference in Lusaka, Zambia, is leading the global commemoration.
In a statement released on Monday, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said Governor Uba Sani’s administration remains committed to protecting the rights of journalists.
He said the media continues to serve as a cornerstone of democracy by informing the public, shaping opinions and ensuring accountability in governance.
Mr Maiyaki stated that a credible and responsible press is vital for maintaining peace and democratic stability, particularly in the face of growing misinformation and disinformation.
He added that the government would continue to safeguard journalists while encouraging professionalism and ethical standards in reporting.
The commissioner also said the Ministry of Information and Culture would strengthen partnerships with media organisations, support training initiatives and promote efforts to counter false information.
He called on media practitioners and other stakeholders to uphold truth, responsibility and mutual respect in building a peaceful and democratic society.
