Joint Security Operation Frees Abducted Passengers On Calabar–Oron Waterways

A coordinated security operation has led to the safe rescue of 14 passengers kidnapped by sea pirates along the Calabar–Oron waterways in Akwa Ibom State.
The rescue was carried out by the Nigeria Police Force in partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following what authorities described as intelligence-led interventions and increased pressure on criminal networks operating in the area.
Speaking in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, said the victims were freed after operatives intensified surveillance and executed strategic operations across known trouble spots.
“All victims were rescued safely, with no loss of life,” she stated, adding that they are receiving medical attention and undergoing debriefing before being returned to their families.
Commissioner of Police Baba Azare commended the joint effort, describing it as a clear example of effective collaboration between security agencies in tackling maritime crime.
He confirmed that operations are ongoing to locate and arrest those behind the нападение, assuring that justice will be served.
The police also called on members of the public, particularly those involved in maritime activities, to share timely and credible intelligence to support ongoing security efforts.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, while warning criminal groups to desist or face coordinated action.
It would be recalled that 15 passengers, including candidates preparing for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), were abducted along the same waterways on 17 April.
