Okpebholo Condemns UNIBEN Gate Killing

Gov. Monday Okpebholo has condemned the daylight killing of a yet-to-be identified young man by suspected gunmen at the main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Sunday.

Okpebholo, in a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Ebojele, on Monday in Benin, described the brazen attack as an affront to human dignity and a threat to public safety.

The governor said the killing was unacceptable and extended condolences to the family and associates of the deceased.

He disclosed that the police had commenced investigations, while security agencies were working round the clock to apprehend those responsible.

Okpebholo assured the public that the case would not be swept under the carpet, vowing that the perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice.

He reiterated his administration’s resolve to stamp out cultism through sustained security operations, collaboration with security agencies, community engagement and rehabilitation programmes for vulnerable youths.

The governor stressed that the state would not serve as a haven for criminals and urged residents to provide useful information to security agencies.

He added that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality.
