Agricultural Research Institute Expands Innovation Drive Amid Climate Challenges

The Institute for Agricultural Research in Zaria has intensified its innovation drive, with over 140 ongoing research activities and 19 new projects introduced in 2025 to address climate-related challenges.

Speaking at the institute’s 2026 Annual Research Review and Planning Meeting, Director Ado Yusuf, represented by Deputy Director Nafi’u Abdu, said the initiatives were shaped by the increasing threat of climate change to agriculture.

He highlighted issues such as unpredictable rainfall and shortened rainy seasons, noting that the institute is focusing on developing resilient crop varieties capable of withstanding these conditions.

Yusuf emphasised that the institute has maintained a consistent track record in delivering improved seed varieties to Nigerian farmers. He disclosed that recent releases include four cowpea varieties, one maize variety and one groundnut variety, with additional innovations achieved through partnerships with seed companies.

He further encouraged state governments to invest in agricultural research infrastructure, praising the Rivers State Government for its support in establishing a research outpost.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Adamu Ahmed, represented by Bello Sabo, urged researchers to prioritise practical solutions over purely academic outputs.

He called for research that directly addresses hunger, malnutrition and the everyday needs of Nigerians.

The workshop, themed “Mainstreaming Climate Change in Agriculture: Strengthening Food Security and Economic Stability under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” brought together stakeholders to explore actionable strategies for improving food security in the country.
