The Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) has endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was disclosed on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting of the council in Lagos State, chaired by GAC leader Tajudeen Olusi and attended by over 20 senior members of the All Progressives Congress.
Olusi said the deliberations, which lasted about two hours, were focused on party strategy and preparations for the 2027 polls.
He explained that while the APC constitution provides for competitive primaries, it also allows consensus arrangements to strengthen internal cohesion.
Following discussions, he said members agreed unanimously to adopt Hamzat, the incumbent deputy governor, as their preferred consensus candidate.
According to him, leaders also committed to supporting the nomination process, including funding the purchase of the party’s expression of interest form.
He, however, clarified that the decision does not replace the party’s primary election process, which will still be conducted in line with established guidelines.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who has previously endorsed Hamzat’s ambition, reaffirmed support for President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party’s policy direction.
The meeting was attended by several political heavyweights, including Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Musiliu Obanikoro, Ganiyu Solomon, Bushura Alebiosu, Tokunbo Abiru, Anthony Adefuye and Cardinal James Odunbaku.
