Upper Chamber Repasses Ports Bill, Advances Food Security Legislation

The Senate has repassed the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill, 2026, after overturning its earlier decision and conducting a detailed reassessment of the proposed law.

The motion for reconsideration was led by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and supported by Minority Leader Abba Moro during Tuesday’s plenary session in Abuja.

The move followed a critical review by the Ministry of Justice, which identified significant issues requiring legislative correction. A joint technical committee involving both chambers of the National Assembly and legal experts was subsequently tasked with refining the bill.

Using provisions of the Senate Standing Orders, lawmakers rescinded the earlier passage and recommitted the bill for thorough reconsideration at the Committee of the Whole.

After detailed clause-by-clause examination, the revised bill was passed.

The Senate also approved three additional bills aimed at strengthening agricultural development and food security, based on a report presented by the Committee on Agricultural Production, Services and Rural Development.

In a separate development, President Bola Tinubu has nominated 15 individuals for appointment into the National Human Rights Commission, under the leadership of Salamatu Suleiman.

The list was referred by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the relevant committee for screening, with a two-week deadline for submission of its report.
