Enugu State To Expand Air Fleet, Launch City Taxis And Major Infrastructure Projects In 2026

Enugu State Government has announced plans to acquire an additional 14 aircraft in 2026, bringing the total fleet to 20, alongside the procurement of 2,000 sedans for city taxis.

Governor Peter Mbah disclosed the plans during the presentation of the 2026 budget to the State House of Assembly in Enugu on Tuesday, describing Enugu Air as a strategic economic enabler and a platform for the state’s emergence as a regional transport hub.

“We have also made provisions for the procurement of 2,000 sedans for our city taxis,” the governor said, adding that transportation is the “lifeblood of commerce” and essential for a thriving economy.

The 2026 budget includes the construction of five new transport terminals in Emene, Udi, Awgu, 4-Corners, and Obollo Afor. Mbah also highlighted plans to develop tourism, with upgrades to Awhum Waterfall and Caves, Okpatu, Nsude, and Ngwo Pine Forest, including Nigeria’s first zip line, as well as improvements to Akwuke Sand Beach.

On roads, the state plans to pave 1,200 urban roads and numerous rural routes, with every Local Government Area set to benefit. Major projects include the 40-kilometre Owo-Ubahu-Amankanu-Neke-Ikem Dual Carriageway and the dualisation of the Abakpa Nike–Ugwogo Nike–Ekwegbe–Opi–Nsukka Road.

The completion of the C Wing at the State Secretariat will ensure all ministries are housed in one location. N868 billion has been allocated to the economic sector, representing 61.4 per cent of the capital expenditure, with investments in agriculture, industry, and trade aimed at creating jobs, reducing poverty, and boosting revenue.

Governor Mbah said agriculture remains key to poverty eradication and self-sufficiency, noting that all 260 planned farm estates will be completed in 2026. Each 200-hectare estate will feature central warehouses, tractor sheds, irrigation systems, electricity, and water supply.
