The Ohanaeze Youth Council has asked Peter Obi to quit the African Democratic Congress within 72 hours and seek another platform ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
The group said the move was necessary to secure Obi’s candidacy “by all feasible means”.
At a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the OYC National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, warned that internal manoeuvres within the ADC could frustrate Obi’s ambition.
He alleged that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha were working as “moles” for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, capable of weakening the party ahead of the election.
Igboayaka claimed that the crisis which affected the Peoples Democratic Party in 2023 was already taking shape in the ADC.
He said Atiku’s decision to pursue the ADC presidential ticket in 2027, despite what he described as the turn of Southern Nigeria, could trigger fresh divisions.
According to him, the former vice president’s ambition may ultimately favour Tinubu’s re-election bid, while positioning himself for a possible return in 2031.
The OYC leader further alleged that Ihedioha had installed loyalists within the ADC structure to undermine Obi’s chances.
He added that similar disagreements over zoning and leadership positions contributed to the PDP’s internal crisis before the last general election.
Igboayaka noted that both the ADC national chairmanship and a leading presidential ambition were currently in Northern hands, a situation he said mirrors past disputes.
He urged Atiku to step down from the race and support a Southern candidate if he was committed to unseating Tinubu.
The group also accused some political figures, including Kenneth Okonkwo, of aligning with interests opposed to Obi’s presidential bid.
