Norway Queen To Receive ‘Pacemaker’ After Ski Trip Heart Complications

Norway’s Queen Sonja would have a pacemaker inserted this week after suffering a heart problem during a ski trip, the royal household said on Tuesday.

The operation would take place on Thursday at Oslo University Hospital.

The queen, 87, is expected to stay there for one or two days of recovery, a statement said.

Sonja is the wife of Norway’s head of state, 87-year-old King Harald.

She was admitted to a Lillehammer hospital over the weekend because of atrial fibrillation.

It was reported that after a brief stay, she was able to leave the hospital with a normal heart rhythm.

Atrial fibrillation occured when the heart beats too quickly and irregularly.

If left untreated, it can lead to stroke. (dpa/NAN)
