NDLEA Seizes Drugs Hidden In Export Parcels, Destroys 65,000kg Of Skunk

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted cocaine and opioid consignments concealed in export parcels bound for the United Kingdom and Australia.

The agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Sunday that the seizures were made during routine inspections at a courier facility in Lagos.

Babafemi explained that operatives uncovered 170 grammes of cocaine hidden inside the walls of a carton containing clothes meant for shipment to Australia.

Another parcel destined for the United Kingdom was found to contain 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 1,100 tramadol capsules and 100 ampoules of promethazine injection.

The agency also intensified its anti-drug operations across several states, leading to the destruction of large quantities of skunk in Delta State.

According to the statement, NDLEA operatives destroyed 27,500 kilogrammes of skunk cultivated on 11 hectares of farmland in Ejeonu village, Ukwuani Local Government Area.

A further raid in Orogun village, Ughelli North Local Government Area, led to the destruction of an additional 37,500 kilogrammes of the substance spread across 15 hectares.

Babafemi stated that the two operations resulted in the destruction of a combined total of 65,000 kilogrammes of skunk.

The spokesman added that officers in Kaduna intercepted 1,989 rounds of military-grade ammunition concealed in garri along the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

He said the suspect arrested in connection with the seizure had been transferred, alongside the ammunition, to another security agency for further investigation.

In Abuja, NDLEA officers arrested a businessman alleged to specialise in producing drug-infused cakes and cookies for social gatherings.

The suspect was apprehended at Life Camp in the Federal Capital Territory with skunk and drug-laced cookies recovered from his residence.

Babafemi further disclosed that several arrests and seizures were recorded in Ogun, Oyo, Taraba, Kano and Edo states as part of the agency’s ongoing nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking.

The NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa, praised officers across the country for maintaining efforts aimed at reducing both drug supply and demand.
