Okpebholo Hails Omoti’s Emergence As NMA President

Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has congratulated Afekhide Omoti on his election as the National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Ebojele, on Tuesday in Benin, the governor described Omoti’s emergence as a well-deserved reward for excellence and professionalism.

Okpebholo said the development was a source of pride to Edo, noting that it reflects the quality of professionals produced by the state.

He added that Omoti’s contributions to ophthalmology, medical research, healthcare administration and advocacy had earned him respect both within and outside Nigeria.

The governor highlighted Omoti’s previous roles, including former NMA chairman in Edo, Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee, and former Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

According to him, Omoti’s wealth of experience has adequately prepared him for the national assignment.

He also commended the new NMA president for authoring more than 140 scientific publications and participating in global medical conferences.

Okpebholo expressed confidence that Omoti would lead the association with integrity, experience and strong leadership over the next two years, while assuring him of the state government’s support.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Omoti was elected at the NMA Annual General Congress held in Kano on May 2, polling 253 votes to defeat his closest rival, Nosa Orhue, who secured 143 votes.
