Fee Hikes Push Enugu Parents Towards Public Schools

Rising tuition fees in private schools across Enugu are forcing some parents to reconsider their options, with many citing growing financial strain.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, several schools have increased fees and levies compared with the last academic session.

Parents say the hikes have compounded the impact of broader economic challenges. One parent, Solomon Agbo, said his child’s fees rose from ₦120,000 to ₦150,000, with little explanation from school authorities.

Another parent, Uchenna Alekeozor, said fees at a school in Independence Layout had climbed from ₦85,000 to ₦110,000 per child, placing it beyond the reach of many families.

Theresa Ogbodo, a civil servant, said she could no longer afford the new charges and planned to move her children to a public school.

Parents have called for government intervention to regulate fees, warning that access to education could be affected if the trend continues.

School proprietors, however, say the increases are driven by rising operational costs. Nneka Udeaku said schools face the same economic pressures as households and must adjust fees to sustain quality.

Chris Agbo added that private schools operate without government funding and play a key role in supplementing public education, arguing that fee adjustments are essential to keep them running.
