‘Intellectually rewarding’—Haruna Bags Second Master’s Degree

Renowned journalist and public affairs commentator, Abdullahi O. Haruna, has earned a second master’s degree in Mass Communication from the National Open University of Nigeria.

Haruna, popularly known as Haruspice, described the academic journey as demanding yet intellectually rewarding, noting that the programme surpassed his expectations.

He said the institution’s structure required rigorous real-time engagement and disciplined scholarship, particularly for candidates aiming for distinction.

The journalist commended NOUN for offering a flexible academic platform tailored to working-class Nigerians, describing it as a bridge addressing gaps in the country’s education sector.

According to him, the programme strengthened his theoretical grounding and deepened his practical understanding of mass communication.

Haruna also acknowledged the role of his academic mentor, Emmanuel Nathan Oguche, in shaping his scholarly development.

He further credited the Commander of the Mining Marshals, John Onoja Attah, whose work inspired the focus of his research.

His thesis, titled “Influence of Newspapers’ Framing of Security Policy on NSCDC’s Response to Illegal Mining in Nigeria,” explored the link between media narratives and institutional responses to security challenges in the mining sector.

Known for his analytical commentary on national issues, Haruna has built a reputation for interrogating policies and political developments with a candid approach.

Beyond journalism, he is also recognised as a leading master of ceremonies in the Federal Capital Territory.

He dedicated the academic achievement to “Mama Jenebu” for her enduring support.
