President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security through sustained investment in police training, intelligence gathering and modern law enforcement systems.Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, said this at the National Police Day Grand Parade and Procession held on Tuesday in Abuja.
The President said the initiative formed part of a broader strategy to reposition the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as a professional, technology-driven and globally competitive institution.
He emphasised that the Nigerian state owed a moral responsibility to adequately equip and support its security agencies, noting that national peace and development depended largely on the effectiveness of law enforcement personnel.According to him, no nation can achieve meaningful progress without a secure social environment.
“We will continue to support these reforms through sustained investment in training and capacity development, modern equipment and technology, improved intelligence.
“We will support investigative capabilities, better welfare and working conditions for police personnel.
“We are determined to build a Police Force that is well equipped, well trained, and well-motivated to confront the complex security challenges of our time,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu acknowledged the sacrifices made daily by police officers across the country, stressing that their service remained critical to national stability.
“Every nation is only as safe as those who keep vigil while others sleep.
“Nigeria must strengthen those who protect the nation. Security is not simply the defence of territory or the prevention of crime. It is the first currency of progress.”
The President noted that the institutionalisation of National Police Day in 2025 demonstrated the Federal Government’s recognition of the contributions and sacrifices of police personnel.
He added that the administration remained resolute in strengthening the Police through concrete policy actions and sustained investment.
Tinubu paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifice as part of the nation’s enduring moral heritage, while extending condolences and gratitude to their families.“Their sacrifice is written into the conscience of our country. Their memory must remain a lamp to those who wear this uniform today and to those who will wear it tomorrow.
“To their families, I extend the profound gratitude of a grateful nation,” he said.Tinubu also commended serving officers for their resilience and dedication in maintaining law and order across the country, often under difficult and dangerous conditions.
The President urged personnel to uphold professionalism, fairness and respect for the rule of law, saying the police uniform symbolised service and responsibility rather than power.
He reaffirmed the administration’s vision of building a police institution anchored on accountability, excellence, courage and service, <span;>while restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the grand finale of the 2026 National Police Day celebration featured a march past, procession, and tactical displays by various police units and cadets of the Police Academy.
