In a resounding tribute to the power of sports beyond the pitch, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), has been decorated as the “Ambassador of Fair Play” by the All-Federal Capital Territory Sports Association (AFSA). The award celebrates his lifelong passion for athletics and his strategic vision of using sporting engagement as a non-kinetic tool for youth development and national stability.
The prestigious honour was conferred during a high-level courtesy visit by AFSA’s top hierarchy to the Ministry of Defence in Abuja. Leading the delegation was the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the AFSA Board of Trustees, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, who underscored the necessity of a formal partnership between the sports community and the defence sector to revitalise the country’s sporting fortunes.
Dogara outlined a blueprint for using sports as a catalyst for socio-economic change, beginning with the Federal Capital Territory. He stressed that a vibrant sports sector is instrumental in driving economic independence, empowering young people, and curbing social vices, thereby contributing directly to national peace and security. “Our goal is to build a sustainable model that mirrors the successes of advanced economies, where sports is a fully-fledged industry,” he remarked .
HRM Sir Eze Ifeanyi Eke, the President of AFSA, personally decorated the Minister with a gold medal, describing the moment as a celebration of shared values. Sir Eke made a compelling case for the resuscitation of sporting infrastructure within military barracks, describing these institutions as historic nurseries for Nigerian sports legends. He referenced a proud lineage of athletes from the armed forces who have brought glory to the nation, arguing that a revival would tap into a vast reservoir of untapped potential .
“Historically, our barracks produced some of Nigeria’s finest athletes. This is an opportunity to rebuild that legacy,” Sir Eke stated. He linked the structured, disciplined environment of the military to the rigour required to nurture elite sportsmen and women, a connection that resonates deeply with the values of AFSA.
Echoing this sentiment, the Director General of AFSA, Mr. Agbor Clinton, framed the “Ambassador of Fair Play” award as a strategic choice. He highlighted the association’s nationwide campaign to embed the ethos of fair play into the national consciousness as a driver of unity and economic progress. “General Musa’s career, defined by discipline and a commitment to national service, mirrors the very essence of sportsmanship. This alignment makes him the perfect figurehead to champion our cause of using sports for societal transformation,” Clinton explained .
This recognition aligns perfectly with General Musa’s publicly stated philosophy on the importance of sports. The Minister, a known enthusiast who actively participates in golf and other activities, has previously spoken about how sports, particularly basketball, shaped his formative years. He has often emphasised that the discipline, focus, and resilience learned on the court have been invaluable throughout his military career . His office has consistently championed grassroots initiatives, including partnerships with institutes to train coaches and athletes, believing that engaging youth productively is a direct route to reducing crime and enhancing national security .
Adding an academic flavour to the event, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, AFSA’s Director of Female Sports Development, presented three inspirational books to the Ministry. She expressed confidence that the knowledge contained within them would significantly benefit Nigeria’s sports ecosystem, from athletes and coaches to administrators, fostering a culture of excellence.
Accepting the honour on behalf of the Minister, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, conveyed Gen. Musa’s deep appreciation. He reaffirmed that the Ministry views this award not just as a personal honour for its boss, but as an endorsement of its broader commitment to leveraging every available avenue, including sports, for national development.
“This award is a testament to General Musa’s dedication,” Mr. Pheelangwa said. “He is passionate about sports and understands its power to unite and build character. The Ministry will continue to support all initiatives that use sports to foster cohesion, empower our youth, and ultimately contribute to a more secure and resilient Nigeria” .
The event served as a powerful testament to the evolving role of Nigeria’s defence establishment. By honouring General Musa, AFSA has shone a light on the crucial interplay between military discipline and athletic endeavour, positioning sports as a formidable force for unity, youth engagement, and the long-term security of the nation.
