Abiodun Commiserates With Lagos-Abeokuta Accident Victims’ Families

Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun has commiserates with the families of the victims of the accident that occurred on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Tuesday.

Abiodun expressed the condolence during a visit to the scene of the accident on Wednesday in Ota.

Represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the governor, who said that he thought it fit to visit the place where the incident happened, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

“The Ogun Government extends its condolences to the bereaved families and prays to God to grant them the fortitude to bear the losses.

“Also, we promise to support the injured who are receiving treatments in the hospital to fast track their quick recovery,” the governor said.

According to him, the state government understands the extent of the tragedy, promising that safety measures would be put in place to prevent future occurrences.

He commended the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other sister agencies, Chairman of Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government and other stakeholders for their quick response in the rescue of the accident victims.

Abiodun reiterated his administration’s commitment to embracing international safety best practice to secure the lives and property of residents, particularly on the highway.

He, however, admonished the public against engaging in street trading so as to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.

The governor emphasised the need for reaching out to drivers’ unions to educate their members on the importance of safety.

He also urged vehicle owners to maintain their vehicles before putting them on the road to avoid preventable crashes.

Also speaking, the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Obalanlege, applauded the governor for taking time to visit the scene of the crash.

The traditional ruler said that the crash could have been prevented if the driver had adhered strictly to traffic rules and regulations.

He warned people to desist from selling goods on the road, thus their lives and those of the buyers in serious danger.

“We can’t continue to blame government when we are the cause of our problems,” he said.

Obalanlege appealed to the people to use designated markets for their businesses and prevent unnecessary loss of lives.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Mack petrol tanker coming from Ilo-Awera toward toll-gate on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway had, on Tuesday, lost control due to brake failure, killing six persons, with three critically injured.
