The Defence Headquarters has announced that 200 United States troops will be deployed to Nigeria in a non-combat, advisory capacity at the invitation of the Federal Government.
Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, said the deployment follows recommendations made by the US–Nigeria Joint Working Group and is intended to strengthen technical and training support across multiple locations.
Clarifying the role of the American personnel, Major General Uba stated that they would not engage in frontline operations.
“They will not serve in a combat capacity and will not assume a direct operational role,” he said.
He emphasised that the Nigerian Armed Forces would retain complete authority over all missions conducted within the country.
“Nigerian forces will retain full command authority, make all operational decisions and will lead all missions on Nigerian sovereign territory,” he said.
According to Defence Headquarters, the arrangement is designed to enhance capacity-building efforts while ensuring Nigeria’s sovereignty and operational control remain fully intact.
