Troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing facility in Agwatashi, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer at OPWS Headquarters, confirmed the discovery in a statement on Monday in Makurdi.
According to Zubairu, troops on routine patrol from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Idadu discovered a concealed site suspected of producing locally fabricated weapons. Some individuals fled upon spotting the troops, but one suspect, Baba Ogar, 26, from Arusu Village in Kokona Local Government Area, was apprehended after hiding in a tree.
A search of the site recovered six locally made pistols, assorted tools and equipment used for weapons production, a sum of ₦40,500, and a mobile phone. Preliminary investigations indicate the site was supplying firearms to criminal elements within and beyond the area.
The suspect is currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices.
The Force Commander of OPWS, Major-General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and vigilance, urging them to continue intelligence-driven operations to dismantle criminal networks within the Joint Operations Area.
