A fire broke out on Wednesday at a diaper factory in Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, causing losses estimated in the millions of naira.
Mr Chukwudi Chiketa, Fire Chief of the Anambra State Fire Service, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha that the swift response of firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to a nearby gas plant.
“Although some factory buildings were affected, our men contained the fire and prevented further damage to the premises,” Chiketa said. He added that no casualties were recorded and that the fire is suspected to have originated from an internal explosion within the factory.
An eyewitness, Obinna Okoye, said the fire began around 5:30 a.m., catching the neighbourhood by surprise while residents were still asleep. He commended the fire service for their quick action, which prevented the inferno from affecting surrounding structures.
