FCT Minister Wike Orders Major Security Sweep Ahead Of Festive Season

In a decisive move to curb rising crime, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered a comprehensive security reinforcement and enhanced surveillance across the nation’s capital.

The directive has led to the immediate deployment of a joint “Operation Sweep” task force comprising the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies. The operation was briefed on Tuesday by FCT Commissioner of Police Benneth Igweh.

Igweh said the operation has been strategically deployed to cover areas most vulnerable to kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities, with the overarching goal of ensuring the safety of residents.

“The Inspector-General of Police and the Service Chiefs have given their approval for this operation designed to address all criminalities in the FCT,” he said, noting the operation enjoys full support from top security authorities.

The commissioner also credited Minister Wike for providing critical logistical support.

“His Excellency Nyesom Wike has given complete support, particularly in terms of logistics. By the time we leave here today, funding for fuel, vehicle servicing, and allowances for personnel will be ready,” Igweh said.

Crackdown on Beggars Suspected of Criminal Links

Part of the operation will focus on the increasing number of beggars in the city centre, whom authorities believe may sometimes serve as a cover for criminal activity.

“Some individuals claiming to be beggars are not genuinely so. Many enter the city with criminal intent. We will profile and remove those who pose security risks, even if they claim to be beggars,” Igweh said.

While the legal framework for a full-scale clearance of beggars is still being finalised, the commissioner said the task force will not hesitate to remove suspicious individuals from identified “black spots.”

The joint team has been tasked with fostering inter-agency coordination to dismantle criminal hideouts and ensure a safer capital city ahead of the yuletide season.
