Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwoland, as the monarch celebrated 10 years on the throne, applauding what he called the ruler’s “dynamic and purposeful leadership”.
Tinubu, represented at the ceremony by senior government official Joseph Tegbe, told attendees in Iwo, Osun State, that the town’s centuries-old history of spiritual significance and interfaith coexistence reflected the monarch’s influence and the resilience of its traditions.
“Iwo has always carried a special cultural importance, and its harmony among diverse faiths underscores the value of visionary leadership,” the President said. He reiterated that his administration remained committed to supporting Nigeria’s traditional institutions, describing them as essential pillars in efforts to strengthen national unity and development.
He also pledged continued federal backing for key infrastructure and development projects across Iwo and Osun State.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin hailed the Oluwo’s efforts in promoting peace and unity across religious and ethnic divides, calling his advocacy “a stabilising force”. Jibrin assured the monarch of the legislature’s continued cooperation.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by Water Resources Commissioner Sunday Olufemi, praised the Oluwo for elevating Iwoland’s profile at home and abroad. He described the 10-year milestone as a moment of pride for the state and reaffirmed government support for the monarch’s leadership.
Reflecting on his reign, Oba Akanbi said he had prioritised blending traditional values with modern ideas to build a culturally vibrant and intellectually dynamic community. He asserted that Iwo’s traditional stature had been rejuvenated and urged local political actors to reclaim the town’s historic influence.
Calling on indigenes to work collectively for the progress of the ancient town, the Oluwo expressed appreciation to all who attended the anniversary celebration.
