The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has warned against any plans to print Biafra currency and operate a government in exile. The group’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, issued the warning on Wednesday and distanced IPOB from those operating Radio Biafra in the United States.
Powerful stressed that those operating under the guise of the Directorate of State are not members of IPOB, adding that the group has no faction. He stated that IPOB is not part of the formation of a Biafra government in exile anywhere.
In a statement, Powerful reiterated that IPOB has no plans to print Biafra currency, stamps, and other important state documents because the group is not yet a sovereign nation. He pointed out that printing currencies now would raise questions about their legal tender status.
The statement also addressed the shambolic Radio Biafra government in exile in the USA, stating that those behind it are not IPOB members and should stop linking themselves to the group. Powerful emphasized that the people piloting the government in exile do not mean well for Biafra freedom and restoration.
IPOB’s warning comes amid increasing calls for secessionist movements in Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern region where the group operates. The Nigerian government has been cracking down on IPOB and other secessionist groups, accusing them of terrorism and separatism
