Unknown armed assailants launched an attack on a General Security Directorate building in the Mazzeh district of Syria’s capital Damascus on Monday, a war monitor reported.
The assailants, who arrived in a vehicle, threw grenades and fired automatic weapons at the facility, prompting an immediate response from on-duty security personnel, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
After a shootout, the attackers fled toward the western part of the sprawling neighborhood, it added.
Security forces have launched a manhunt in Mazzeh, detaining multiple suspects and individuals allegedly linked to the attack, the observatory noted.
Authorities have heightened security measures in the area, with reports indicating that an extensive operation may be underway to track down the perpetrators.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, and no official information has been provided on potential casualties or damage.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions following recent violence between security forces and armed personnel loyal to the former regime in the coastal region, which resulted in over 1,000 deaths, including many civilians. (Xinhua/NAN)
