Eyal Zamir has officially assumed his role as Israel’s chief of staff of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) during a handover ceremony in Tel Aviv on Wednesday.
The new IDF chief was appointed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz.
Zamir succeeds Herzi Halevi, who resigned more than 15 months after the start of the Gaza war, citing the failure of the Israeli army on Oct. 7, 2023 as the reason.
During the ceremony, Netanyahu emphasised the responsibility now on Zamir’s shoulders, saying that Israel is engaged in a prolonged conflict with outcomes that will impact future generations.
General Michael Erik Kurilla, the commander of U.S. troops in the Middle East, was also present.
Zamir was previously director general of the Israeli Defense Ministry, where he played a significant role in the sale of the Arrow 3 missile defense system to Germany. ’’ (dpa/NAN)
