Zamfara: INEC To Hold Supplementary Election In Five Polling Units

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a supplementary election in five polling units of Kaura Namoda South State Assembly constituency in Zamfara for 21 August.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mahmmud Isah, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau on Tuesday. He said the supplementary poll would be held in three polling units in Kyambarawa ward—Shiyar Magaji (Kofar Hamza) 002, Tukasu (Sabuwar Kasuwa) 009, and Kofar Fafa (Shiyar Fada)—and in two units in Sakajiki ward, Alko (Shiyar Kudu) 002 and Shiyar Nufawa (Kofar MD Nuhu) 007.

The commission had declared the 16 August bye-election inconclusive after cancelling results from the affected units due to alleged irregularities.

Returning Officer, Prof. Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University, Gusau, explained that 5,446 voters were registered in the affected areas, with 3,265 Permanent Voter Cards collected. He said the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 7,001 votes against the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 5,339, but the margin of 1,662 votes was smaller than the number of collected PVCs.

INEC cited provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act in justifying its decision to order a supplementary poll.
