The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has expelled Rep. Peter Uzokwe from its ranks, citing gross misconduct and anti-party activities.
Announcing the decision in Abuja, YPP National Publicity Secretary Egbeola Martins said the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) unanimously ratified Uzokwe’s expulsion after receiving petitions and video evidence of his alleged violations.
Uzokwe, who represents the Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, was accused of breaching party discipline and showing “utter disregard for YPP’s values.”
Martins condemned the lawmaker’s recent attendance at an APGA rally where he reportedly claimed that the YPP had no candidate for the forthcoming Anambra governorship election.
He described the claim as “deceptive and irresponsible,” adding that Uzokwe’s actions were “a calculated attempt to mislead voters and destabilise the party.”
Martins also dismissed Uzokwe’s self-proclaimed leadership of the YPP following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, saying the party had made no such appointment.
In a broader comment on security, Martins expressed concern over Nigeria’s listing by the United States as a “country of particular concern,” saying that the failure to prosecute known terrorism financiers was “deeply troubling.”
He urged the Federal Government to demonstrate fairness and transparency in its counter-terrorism efforts, warning that politicising religious identity in the fight against insurgency would only deepen division.
“Sustainable peace requires justice and accountability for all victims, irrespective of religion or ethnicity,” he said.
