Yakubu Gowon Reflects on the Trials of the Nigerian Civil War

Yakubu Gowon, the former head of state, has labelled the era of the Nigerian Civil War, spanning from 6th July 1967 to 15th January 1970, as the most arduous period of his life.

He made these remarks on Saturday in Abuja while receiving a Lifetime Integrity and Achievement Award during the 5th Convention of the Christian Men’s Fellowship, Abuja Anglican Diocese.

“The civil war is a constant memory for me; it was indeed the toughest time I’ve experienced,” Mr Gowon stated. “Though it wasn’t a choice I made, I found myself in a role that required me to act to keep our nation united.”

He clarified that his actions during the war stemmed not from hatred but from a pressing need to safeguard the country’s unity.

Mr Gowon called on individuals to uphold the truth and highlighted the significance of forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity among different faiths and ethnic communities. “I assure you, there was never any animosity directed towards any group,” he said.

Reflecting on his life after the conflict, he mentioned that his choices were frequently inspired by prayer and a commitment to integrity and compassion.

“I pray for guidance to do what is right, treating everyone with love and respect,” he added. “Ultimately, we must accept: no victor, no vanquished.”

He commended the advancements Nigeria has made since that period and encouraged citizens to back governmental efforts promoting peace, love, and mutual respect.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by John-Kennedy Opara, praised the honourees for their dedication to integrity, stating, “These individuals have made significant impacts, and God has worked through them to influence the nation.”

Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), who presided over the event, acknowledged the honourees and urged Christians to uphold principles of truth, integrity, and courage, emphasising the necessity for leaders of honour and integrity in Nigeria.
