A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, on Wednesday approached a Shari’a court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to Usman Shuaibu over alleged neglect and failure to provide for the family.
Bello, who communicated through sign language interpreted by Aisha Sulaiman, told the court that her husband gives her only N50 for food, leaving her and their child in hardship.
“We got married in 2016, and it was my parents who provided food initially. The problem started when the food finished,” she said.
She accused her husband, a tailor by profession, of consistently failing to meet his responsibilities, even during the birth of their child.
“When I delivered my baby, he couldn’t pay the hospital bill. It was his mother who provided the money,” she added.
Bello said family members had previously intervened and urged Shuaibu to take responsibility, but he refused to change. She therefore asked the court to dissolve the marriage.
Shuaibu, however, denied all the allegations.
Presiding Judge, Malam Kabir Muhammad, adjourned the case and ordered both parties to return with their parents or guardians on August 25.
