Woman In Kwara State Requests Divorce Over Husband’s Lack Of Support

A woman has asked a court in Ilorin to end her marriage, claiming her husband has failed to meet his responsibilities as a spouse.

Sherifat Bamidele made the request before the Area Court in Centre-Igboro on Wednesday, saying she could no longer tolerate the behaviour of her husband, Suleiman Popoola. The couple were married in March 2024 under Islamic tradition.

Bamidele alleged that Popoola does not contribute to the family’s finances and leaves her to bear the entire burden of their household. She also noted that she is solely responsible for the welfare of her child from a previous relationship.

“I pay the rent, provide food, maintain the home, and care for my child. He has not played any supportive role. I’m no longer willing to live this way,” she said.

Judge Toyin Aluko adjourned the case until 12 August for mention.
