Wike Declares Infrastructure Success Weakens Opposition Ahead Of Nigeria’s 2027 Polls

Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, has credited President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure-focused governance for shifting political momentum, suggesting that visible progress in the capital is blunting opposition campaigns ahead of the next general elections.

Wike made the remarks during the inauguration of a key roadway in Abuja that connects Nnamdi Azikiwe Way, Katampe, and Wole Soyinka Way — a 3.7km, six-lane dual carriageway built to enhance connectivity across major districts.

“The wave of development is undeniable. It’s making opposition unity difficult, if not impossible,” Wike said, referring to previously anticipated coalitions against Tinubu.

According to the minister, the road project was awarded in September 2024 and construction began the following month. The project’s rapid execution, including a last-minute extension through Gishiri Village, demonstrated new levels of contractor confidence in government reliability.

Wike said the prompt payment for public works had restored trust among private firms, with some even advancing work ahead of formal approvals.

He also emphasised the administration’s commitment to fairness, noting that affected residents received compensation well above the standard, alongside resettlement support — in line with Tinubu’s development blueprint.

In addition to this newly commissioned project, Wike announced upcoming inaugurations: a 15-kilometre road to Wassa, a project in Life Camp, and the headquarters of Nigeria’s electoral body, INEC.

President Tinubu praised Wike as a collaborative leader and highlighted infrastructure as a pillar of national progress.

“Infrastructure is a catalyst. It connects people, reduces inequality, and drives economic expansion,” the president noted.

FCT Minister of State Dr Mariya Mahmoud thanked Abuja residents for their patience during construction. “Your endurance and faith in public service delivery are what make projects like this meaningful,” she said.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Mr Richard Dauda, explained that the road serves as a strategic link between Phase I and Phase II of the city, improving access to key districts including Maitama, Katampe, Jahi, and Mabushi.
