The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has firmly denied issuing any directive limiting subject choices for Senior Secondary students preparing for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Responding to circulating reports, Mrs Moyosola Adeshina, Acting Head of the Council’s Public Affairs Department, said in a Tuesday statement from Lagos that the information was false and should be disregarded.
“There is no truth in the claim that WAEC has restricted students’ subject choices. The Council has not released any such directive,” Adeshina said, stressing that only official statements from WAEC should be considered credible.
She explained that the formulation and regulation of school curricula fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, not WAEC. “We merely assess candidates based on existing government-approved syllabuses,” she noted.
Adeshina underscored that any modification to subjects or curricula follows a transparent process led by the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders. “WAEC does not act arbitrarily or unilaterally in introducing or revising subjects,” she said.
She assured stakeholders that accurate information regarding the 2026 examination will be announced through WAEC’s website and recognised media outlets.
“WAEC remains committed to fairness, professionalism, and integrity. Every candidate taking the 2026 WASSCE will be given equal opportunity for assessment,” Adeshina concluded.
