Vice-President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the second United Nations (UN) Food Systems Summit, taking place from July 27 to 29.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Shettima’s aircraft touched down at the Bole International Airport around 4:26 p.m. local time, where he was received by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, along with key officials from the Nigerian Embassy.

Those present included Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires to Ethiopia, Amb. Nasir Aminu; Finance Attaché, Dr. Suleiman Dauda; Deputy Defence Attaché (Air Force), Wing Commander Gabriel Batubo; Deputy Head of Mission, Amb. Macy Ogbede; First Secretary, Mr. Jangado Ishaku, and other senior diplomatic staff.

The Vice-President is expected to join other global leaders in high-level engagements focused on transforming the coffee value chain, as well as roundtable sessions and bilateral meetings aimed at advancing Nigeria’s food security agenda.

Shettima will also take part in side events highlighting practical examples of food systems transformation, with a focus on knowledge exchange and partnership building.

The summit will review progress made since the inaugural 2021 UN Food Systems Summit and the 2023 Stocktake (UNFSS+2), with a renewed push to build sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems globally.

The gathering will also spotlight successful country-level initiatives, showcase innovative practices, and address food security challenges in fragile and conflict-affected areas. It forms part of wider efforts to align sustainable development goals (SDGs) and global strategies for food systems reform.
