Prof. Offiong Offiong, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UniCal), has vowed to tackle admission racketeering and illegal mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) under his tenure.
Speaking during his investiture on Monday as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the institution, Offiong emphasised that his administration would prioritise transparency, accountability, and the welfare of students.
The Vice Chancellor described admission malpractice and unauthorised NYSC mobilisation as issues that had tarnished the university’s reputation. “Our reactivated central admissions committee will strictly follow the regulations of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and the NYSC. Any staff found culpable of malpractice will be penalised,” he said.
Offiong also outlined plans to develop infrastructure, improve examination spaces, expand work-study programmes, offer scholarships, and enhance classroom environments to protect academic integrity.
He stressed the importance of community engagement, environmental sustainability, and international collaboration. The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the university’s governing council for entrusting him with leadership.
During the ceremony, outgoing Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Obi handed over the university’s mace of office, urging Offiong to focus on producing graduates well-groomed in character and learning.
