Umahi Orders Proper Documentation, Transparency On Lagos-Calabar Highway Project

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has directed project managers and engineers handling the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to maintain meticulous records of all construction processes before the end of September.

Speaking during an inspection of the project and some bridges in Lagos, Umahi stressed that every stage of work—from soil removal to refilling and pavement—must be properly documented and shared with oversight agencies, including the EFCC, ICPC, and the National Assembly.

“When the job is done, people may forget, so these records are important,” he said.

To ensure transparency, he also ordered that two television stations be taken to the site weekly to showcase progress to Nigerians.

The minister explained that in some sections, poor materials had to be excavated to depths of five to 20 metres and replaced with stone lumps and sand, describing the process as critical for the road’s durability.

Umahi commended Hitech Construction Company for its manpower and equipment, likening the pace of work to “an anthill,” and praised the firm’s courage and commitment to national development.

He assured that the ministry would continue to approve payments promptly once works are verified.

The 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the Federal Government’s flagship projects, expected to enhance connectivity, trade, and development across coastal states.
