U.S. Pledges $32.5m To Boost WFP’s Food Security Efforts In Nigeria

The United States government has announced a $32.5 million contribution to the World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen food and nutrition support for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people in Nigeria.

The funding, announced in a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday, will allow WFP to assist 764,205 people, including displaced families in the conflict-hit Northeast and Northwest. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, along with young children, will also benefit from targeted nutrition packages delivered via electronic food vouchers.

The U.S. is WFP’s largest donor globally, providing $2.9 billion in 2023 alone. The organisation — awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 — works in more than 120 countries, delivering food aid in crises and supporting projects such as school feeding, maternal nutrition, and resilience to climate shocks.
