The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the United States have renewed their defence partnership with a focus on precision targeting, inter-agency collaboration and safeguarding civilian lives during military operations.
The reaffirmation came during a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday between Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and a U.S. Institute of Security Governance team led by retired Maj.-Gen. Miguel Castellanos.
Abubakar credited the Air-to-Ground Integration (AGI) programme, backed by Washington, with significantly improving the NAF’s precision strike capability and reducing risks to non-combatants. He pledged to deepen cooperation to ensure smarter and more responsible deployment of air power.
Castellanos praised Nigeria’s “visionary leadership” in advancing civilian harm mitigation, promising sustained U.S. assistance through training and technical support. He added that the partnership was not only improving combat readiness but also building systems to ensure operations remain consistent with humanitarian principles.
