Two Arrested In Connection With Gruesome Murder Of Police Superintendent In Southern Nigeria

Authorities in southern Nigeria have apprehended two alleged members of a notorious cult gang believed to be responsible for the murder of Superintendent Bako Angbashim, the former Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ahoada Division, in Rivers State.

Angbashim was brutally killed in September 2023 during an ambush by cultists in Oduemude, a remote community in Ahoada-East Local Government Area. His death sent shockwaves across the country, highlighting the growing influence of cult gangs in the Niger Delta region.

According to a press release from the Rivers State Police Command, the suspects—identified as Lovegod Goodluck and Precious Olumini—were arrested during separate raids conducted by the Command’s Octopus Tactical Unit, which has been actively pursuing remnants of the Iceland cult faction.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko disclosed that the initial breakthrough came on 3 May 2025, when officers received intelligence on the whereabouts of a key figure known as ‘K1’, a high-ranking member of the late 2 Baba’s network. The team moved into Ikata community, arresting Goodluck and seizing a locally manufactured firearm along with live ammunition.

Subsequent operations on 13 June resulted in the capture of Olumini, who had previously evaded arrest. An English-made pump-action shotgun and a locally crafted pistol were recovered from his possession.

“Both suspects have admitted to being members of the Iceland cult group,” Iringe-Koko said, adding that the gang had long operated in the area with impunity before the recent crackdown.

Police confirmed that both suspects remain in custody, with investigations ongoing. Authorities are intensifying efforts to arrest other members still at large and recover additional weapons.

The murder of Superintendent Angbashim marked a turning point in Nigeria’s fight against criminal cult gangs, sparking nationwide calls for reforms and heightened security in volatile regions. The latest arrests mark a significant milestone in delivering justice for the fallen officer.
