A traditional ruler in Akwa Ibom State, Eteidung Aniedi Ebong, has reportedly survived an alleged attack amid an ongoing legal and community dispute involving a Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) solar project.
Eyewitnesses in Ifa Ikot Akpan told reporters that unidentified men assaulted the village head last week in what they described as an attempted kidnapping or assassination. The incident has since heightened tensions in the community.
The dispute dates back to a 2025 NDDC solar streetlight project. Residents allege that while 233 units were approved, fewer than half were delivered. The project was handled under the supervision of a retired State Security Service officer, Mr Noel Nduka, who has faced allegations of misconduct—claims he has not publicly addressed.
Police inquiries were launched following petitions from both sides, and the Akwa Ibom Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs reportedly reviewed aspects of the case. Authorities confirmed that the matter has been referred to the courts for resolution.
Community representatives have appealed for calm and urged security agencies to investigate the attack.
Eteidung Ebong has denied wrongdoing and maintained that all disputes must be settled lawfully. “We will not be silenced. Justice must take its course,” he said.
