Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation Of Amupitan As INEC Chairman

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has nominated Professor Joash Amupitan to serve as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking parliamentary confirmation for the appointment.

In a formal communication to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, read during Tuesday’s plenary, Tinubu said the nomination aligns with Section 154 (1) of the country’s 1999 Constitution.

Professor Amupitan, a respected legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. His appointment was unanimously endorsed by the National Council of State on 9 October.

If confirmed, Amupitan will succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who recently completed his term after overseeing two general elections during his tenure.

The president urged the Senate to process the nomination swiftly, attaching Amupitan’s curriculum vitae to his letter. Akpabio subsequently referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for deliberation.

The nomination marks one of the first major institutional appointments in Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to reinforce Nigeria’s electoral framework.
