Tinubu Praises International Successes Of Gumel And Amusan

Nigeria’s president has celebrated the accomplishments of two nationals making their mark abroad, describing them as symbols of the country’s growing influence in global affairs and sport.

In a statement on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu congratulated Farouk Gumel, recently appointed Chairman of Botswana’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Limited, and Tobi Amusan, who won silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Tinubu said Gumel’s appointment underlined the reputation Nigerian professionals enjoy internationally, citing his wider role as Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment (TGI) Group. He credited Gumel with helping drive Nigeria’s push for food security, adding that his new position “cements Nigeria’s reputation for excellence in global finance.”

Turning to athletics, Tinubu described Amusan’s performance in Tokyo — where the 28-year-old hurdler clocked 12.29 seconds to finish second — as a testament to her resilience and patriotism. “Her achievement is a source of national pride,” he said.

The president added that both figures reflect Nigeria’s potential to excel across sectors and pledged his administration’s continued support for their endeavours.
