President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday inaugurated the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem appeal fund, securing N320 million in donations to support families of fallen soldiers and serving troops across the country.
Tinubu led the contributors with N200 million, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to honouring military heroes and boosting the morale of personnel confronting security challenges nationwide.
The ceremony, held at the State House, Abuja, also saw Senate President Godswill Akpabio donate N100 million, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, contributed N20 million.
Tinubu said the Armed Forces Remembrance Day—observed annually on January 15—remains a solemn occasion to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for national unity and peace.
“As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve,” he said.
The President commended serving troops combating terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other threats, describing their resilience as a source of national pride. He noted that better synergy among security agencies had led to significant gains, including the surrender of insurgents, neutralisation of key terrorist figures, and rescue of captives.
Tinubu disclosed that the Ministry of Defence was developing a programme to deploy retired military personnel to reclaim ungoverned spaces nationwide.
He also announced a new digital platform, “Thank a Soldier”, featuring a QR code to enable Nigerians to send messages of appreciation to troops.
Tinubu urged citizens to wear the 2026 remembrance emblem with pride, describing it as a symbol of sacrifice and national gratitude. He further appealed to Nigerians to reject divisive rhetoric and protect the nation’s unity.
“As President and Commander-in-Chief, I remain committed to equipping and motivating our military. Security is a central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he added.
The event marked the commencement of nationwide fundraising and awareness activities leading up to the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Mrs. Grace Henry, decorated dignitaries and called for continued support for the armed forces.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima, service chiefs, and senior government officials attended the ceremony.
