Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has made a high-level visit to Benue State, arriving on Wednesday for a day-long engagement amid heightened tensions and insecurity in the region.
The President’s aircraft landed at Makurdi Airport at 1:40 p.m., where he was received by Governor Hyacinth Alia, Senator George Akume, and an array of North Central political leaders, including regional governors, cabinet members, and federal appointees.
President Tinubu began his visit with a compassionate stop at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where he met with individuals wounded during the recent attack on Yelewata Town. Survivors have been receiving treatment for injuries sustained in what local officials have called a “senseless wave of violence.”
In a bid to address the root causes of these attacks and chart a path forward, the President is also convening a town hall dialogue with Benue stakeholders. Discussions are expected to centre on security, displacement, and long-term reconciliation efforts.
The visit highlights the federal government’s increasing attention to intercommunal conflict and internal displacement, which continue to threaten peace and development in central Nigeria.
