Three Teenagers Drown In Bauchi River, Police Urge Water Safety Awareness

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of three teenage boys who drowned in a river at Jinkiri Village, located in Bauchi Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Ahmed Wakil, disclosed the tragic incident to journalists on Wednesday in Bauchi.

The victims, identified as Habibu Mohammed (16), Abubakar Mohammed (16), and Zailani Sule (14), were all residents of Durum Village. The incident reportedly occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

According to preliminary investigations, the teenagers had been engaged in mining activities in the area and later decided to swim in the nearby river, where they drowned.

“Despite prompt efforts to secure medical attention, they sadly died before reaching the hospital,” Wakil said.

He added that the boys were examined and confirmed dead at Bauchi Specialist Hospital and later released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, extended condolences to the grieving families and stressed the need for heightened community awareness on water safety, especially during adverse weather conditions.

Wakil further confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and reiterated the command’s commitment to promoting safety education to prevent future incidents.
