Taiwan military members sentenced for leaking secrets to China

Eight retired and active members of the Taiwanese military were on Thursday sentenced to prison for up to 13 years for leaking classified information to China.

The Taiwan High Court said the eight defendants were handed sentences ranging from a year and a half up to 13 years for crimes including violating the National Security Law.

The crime also included delivering classified information and accepting bribes.

They can still appeal.

The case involves the Taiwanese Army’s Aviation and Special Forces Command, which was Taiwan’s special operations force.

According to prosecutors, some defendants cooperated with China in filming a video titled “I Will Surrender to the People’s Liberation Army’’ and pledged their allegiance to Beijing.

The video was delivered to China in exchange for payment.

The case involved 10 people in total.

Apart from the eight found guilty, one person was acquitted and another person failed to show up for trial is wanted for arrest. (dpa/NAN)
