South Korean Embassy Mourns Buhari, Hails His Contribution To Stronger Nigeria–South Korea Ties

The South Korean Embassy in Nigeria has expressed sadness over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, crediting him with significantly strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and South Korea during his time in office.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 until 2023, died on Sunday in a London hospital following an illness. His death was announced by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, alongside his former aide, Bashir Ahmad.

In a tribute shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) page, the embassy wrote: “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. His leadership helped shape Nigeria’s path and contributed to the growth of South Korea and Nigeria relations. Our thoughts are with his family and the people of Nigeria during this time of loss.”

According to the embassy, Buhari’s presidency saw notable progress in bilateral cooperation across areas such as trade, energy, education and technology.

Joint projects focused on boosting industrial capacity and investing in human capital development, which the embassy described as instrumental in forging deeper collaboration between the two countries.

The statement concluded by acknowledging Buhari’s role in providing a platform for closer diplomatic engagement and mutual understanding, setting the stage for future partnership.
