SON Takes a Stand Against Substandard Products in Nigerian Markets

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has condemned the surge of substandard products in Nigerian markets, primarily caused by importers. The organisation also alerted local manufacturers to cease the production of inferior goods for local consumption.

During a workshop entitled “Growing Businesses Through Standardisation” in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, SON’s Director General, highlighted that adherence to standards is vital for achieving economic and industrial growth.

Represented by Mrs Talutu Athan, the Director of Corporate Affairs, he noted that the workshop’s intent was to enhance stakeholders’ understanding and collaboration in standardisation efforts crucial for business growth.

Okeke emphasised the importance of reputation in today’s economy, stating that consumers are keen to understand not just the product but the production process. “To access premium markets, products must comply with established benchmarks designed to ensure quality, not to hinder production,” he explained.

SON is resolute in its mission against substandard goods, pointing out that inferior products harm the reputation of legitimate producers. “Your support and partnership are crucial for this fight,” he urged.

He concluded by stating that standards serve as foundational elements for resilience, providing a competitive advantage and protecting investments, ultimately leading to enduring success.
