Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has ordered the arrest of suspects linked to the fatal shooting of a woman during a clash at Onitsha’s Main Market.
The governor’s directive was contained in a statement released on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, who confirmed that investigations were under way and that those found culpable would be prosecuted.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at Emeka Offor Plaza, where members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) brigade allegedly fired live rounds at traders during a dispute.
One woman, identified as Ms Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival at hospital. Four others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment, with the state government pledging to meet their medical needs.
Authorities expressed regret over the loss of life, stressing that the tragedy underscored the need for stronger accountability among enforcement agencies.
“The police responded promptly and restored calm the same day,” the statement read. “Patrols and monitoring teams remain on site to ensure peace is maintained.”
The OCHA brigade, a state-controlled task force, is mandated to enforce environmental laws and cleanliness across Anambra but has faced criticism in the past over its heavy-handed tactics.
