Shettima To Represent Tinubu At COP30 Climate Summit In Brazil

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja to attend the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu.

The announcement was made by Mr Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice-President).

The two-day conference, holding from Nov. 6 to 7, is being convened by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and will bring together heads of state, policymakers, investors and environmental advocates.

Themed “Climate Action and Implementation,” COP30 will centre on climate adaptation, biodiversity, forest conservation, and climate justice.

Nkwocha said Shettima would deliver Nigeria’s address during the leaders’ plenary, highlighting the nation’s efforts toward sustainable climate policies.

He added that the Vice-President would also attend the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, join a roundtable on Climate and Nature, and later participate in sessions on energy transition and the Paris Agreement’s implementation.

According to Nkwocha, Shettima will hold bilateral meetings to advance Nigeria’s participation in carbon markets, a move expected to attract up to $3 billion annually in carbon financing for national climate goals.

After the conference, Shettima will travel to Brasília for talks with his Brazilian counterpart, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin, to strengthen South-South cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil.

He is due back in Nigeria after concluding his official engagements.
